The E. Wayne Cooley Scholarship Award was established in 1993 as a tribute to the man who served as Executive Secretary of the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union from 1954 through 2002. The recipient of this award is recognized as being representative of the most elite of the superlative Iowa Girl, not only on the playing field but also in the classroom, in her school, and in her community. Her profile will reflect discipline, perseverance, character, citizenship, and leadership, which personified the life and expectations of E. Wayne Cooley.
Each high school is limited to one nomination. It is the responsibility of the local school to determine how the nominee is selected.
The Karon Brown Award was established in 2021 as a tribute to Karon Brown who served the IGHSAU in a variety of roles for 43 years. The recipient of this award is recognized for excellence in the classroom, in athletics and must plan on a future in a sports-related field. Her profile should reflect loyalty, perseverance, character, and passion for continuing a career serving female athletics. Those same qualities personified Karon Brown and her work for the IGHSAU.
Specific consideration will be made to those with a passion for event management and innovative thinking regarding female athletics.
The Robert Smiley Scholarship is offered by the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union and the Smiley family in honor of the longtime IGHSAU Associate Executive Secretary who passed away in 2003.
Bob Smiley impacted youth his entire life. He began as a teacher, coach, official and administrator in several schools throughout the state. He joined the IGHSAU in 1970 as the associate executive secretary and helped build the Girls’ Union into a nationally respected leader in girls’ athletics.
In recognition of his work towards ensuring the Iowa Girl is a leader of her peers, the IGHSAU created a scholarship.
Special attention will be given to the applicant showing a specific financial and/or situational need because Bob had a special place in his heart for the underdog.
